Astyanax: A New Peer-Reviewed Undergraduate Journal of Classical Studies

The Department of Classics at the University of Reading is pleased to announce the launch of Astyanax, a peer-reviewed undergraduate journal on Classical Studies. This journal aims to give a platform for undergraduate research to be published through a peer-review process. The editorial team welcome contributions on ancient Greek and Latin literature, philology, linguistics, and history as well as contributions on cultural and material aspects of the ancient world (e.g., ancient religion, archaeology, art) from 12th c. BCE to 5th century CE. Papers on the reception of antiquity in any aspect of the modern world, Global Classics, and the Egyptian, Anatolian, African, and ancient Mediterranean worlds are also welcome.

The first call for contributions is now open, and the editors of Astyanax invite submissions of articles written by undergraduate students. For more details about submission guidelines, please take a look at the journal website. Submissions for the first edition of Astyanax are due by 11:59 PM GMT on Friday, 27 February 2026. Please send all questions and submissions to astyanaxjournal@reading.ac.uk.

Astyanax also invites submissions for two competitions. The first is an essay competition for school students in Years 10-13. For more details about this competition, please take a look at the guidelines here. Submissions for the essay competition are due by 11:59 PM GMT on Friday, 30 January 2026. Please complete the registration form on the journal website to submit your essay.

The second competition is an ancient Greek or Latin composition contest for undergraduate students. For more details about this competition, please take a look at the guidelines here. Submissions for the composition competition are due by 11:59 PM GMT on Friday, 30 January 2026. Please complete the registration form on the journal website to submit your essay.

To celebrate the launch of the journal, the Department of Classics at the University of Reading will run a one-day workshop in summer 2026, which will be open to both undergraduates and school students in Years 10 to 13 who may want to present their papers. Participants can present their work in the form of a 15-minute presentation followed by 10 minutes of discussion, or in the form of posters. School students can also present their papers along with their teacher. More information will be announced soon!
