Last Saturday saw a large outbreak of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in the south-eastern USA with a particularly large and long-lived EF4 tornado which killed 10 people in Mississipi. There is a lot of material on the web discussing the background to the storms, but the accuweather blog showing radar images of the tornado was particularly helpful.
Detailed information on the outbreak and maps of the storm path and damage photos can be found on the National Weather Service site. According to preliminary estimates the Mississippi tornado had the sixth longest track since 1970 at 149 miles.

I’ll talk more about the proceeding large-scale conditions in WCD today. This weekend looks likely to have similar synoptic conditions to last weekend and there is some chance of severe weather through the weekend.
