The results for the Research Excellence Framework (REF), REF 2014, the UK’s latest assessment of University research, were released this morning (18 December 2014). The University of Reading as a whole has moved upward and the Department of Meteorology performed well, ranking 3rd in the UK in our Unit of Assessment 7 (Environment and Earth Systems Science). In the most recent previous assessment in 2008 (RAE2008), we were ranked 9th in the corresponding Table. We were rated particularly strongly on the new ‘Impact’ metric, and on ‘research environment’. We improved our overall research profile with 86% being recognised as World Leading or Internationally Excellent, up from 75% in RAE2008.
